Catch Phrase Game

Catch Phrase is one of the best classic word guessing games. Simple and fun!

For Catch Phrase game you'll need four or more people. Sit in a circle so that the people on either side of you are on the opposite team.

The clue-giver must get his or her team to guess the displayed word and then pass the disc to the other team. The team that is holding the disc when the timer goes off loses and the other team gets a point.

You can give any physical gesture and nearly any verbal hint as clues. The commonly rejected verbal clues are rhyming words, the number of syllables, the first letter of the word, or any part of the word.

Here are some examples of good clues...

• Sea - "not an ocean but a ____"
• Pout - "you better not ____ I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town"
• Lion - "The ____, the Witch, and the Wardrobe"

Be creative!

When the timer goes off the other team has the opportunity to guess the word and get a point.

Sometimes the timer may go off just as the disc is being handed over. The rule still applies, whoever is holding it when the timer goes off loses.

There may be times when clue-giver doesn't know what or who the word is about. In those cases you can either call it tough luck or have the team take a penalty of one point and allow the clue-giver to press the button.

If you're really generous you can just allow them to get a new word for free.

If you don't have Catch Phrase game, there are two versions of it nowadays, the original and the electronic.

The original version includes a plastic disc and circular cards with words printed on the edges. You place a card in the disc and a single word is displayed through a slot. There's a button on the side that you press (slam as the game gets more exciting) to go to the next word.

There's also the timer button (beeps faster as the time goes down) and a board with which you can use to keep track of the score. Board makes it so the first to seven wins, but nothing is stopping you from just going on!

The electronic version is still a disc, but the words are displayed on blacklit screen. It also keeps score and is the timer. It has over 10,000 words separated to categories like "food/drink," "entertainment," and "family."

Some people prefer the original to the electronic because the disc is lighter and the button on the side allows for slamming. The electronic randomizes the words so you won't ever be able to remember the order of the words unlike in the classic version.

For younger players I recommend the more appropriate Catch Phrase Junior.

There is never a dull moment in Catch Phrase Game. You never know if the disc is going to get to you or not!
